The Maldives
A thousand sun soaked tropical islands, crystal
clear waters, aqua lagoons and pure white sand
beaches. Peace and tranquillity abound in
this most stunning of destinations. The
Maldives have been called 'one of the wonders
of the world' by some, 'a garland of islands'
by others. All who venture here leave
thoroughly relaxed with memories of beautiful
vistas and warm hospitality.
Dive the Maldives
The Maldives is famous for its abundant underwater
beauty. Many divers come to the Maldives to enjoy
the warm waters, excellent visibility and diverse
aquatic life. All resorts in the Maldives have
professional dive schools catering for beginners
and the experienced. Many resorts also have
their own 'house reef' just a short boat ride
or swim from the shore. Snorkellers
too can experience the same pleasures from the
beach and it is quite common for schools of fish,
rays and turtles to swim into the shallows for
everyone to enjoy.
Geography
Situated in the Indian Ocean south west of the
southern tip of India the Maldives have formed
from millions of years of limestone coral
accumulations. The atolls of the Maldives are
part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos
Ridge. The islands are low lying with the highest
point only 3 metres above sea level. The reefs
protect the islands from the monsoons and the
sea. Ground up coral remains make up the
pure soft white sand of the islands.
